Meetings: where minutes are taken, and hours are wasted.” Though often attributed to the fictional Captain James T. Kirk, this sentiment rings uncomfortably true. A 2022 University of North Carolina study found that a third of meetings are entirely unnecessary, draining both time and resources. For large companies, these unproductive sessions can cost upwards of $100 million annually.
In response, many organisations have trimmed their calendars, scrapping recurring meetings, instituting “no-meeting days,” and capping meeting durations. However, these productivity strategies don’t easily apply to the most critical—and costly—gatherings of all: board meetings.
